An Idea from Germany Changes the World
In 1966, Heinz Hankammer had a far-sighted vision for potable water. He noticed that our key source of life, water, is exposed to countless dangers and that the impurities in our water resources need to be removed to create healthier, better tasting drinking water. He also recognized that in some parts of the world people need better tasting water and in others water needs to be treated to relieve health concerns. So, he set out to optimize normal tap water with the simplest means possible. He developed a filter to produce completely desalinated water. The filter was known as the AquaDeMat and was used in garages throughout Europe to produce demineralized water for car batteries. Hankammer affectionately named his original filter company after his daughter, Brita. In fact, his entire family helped him set up his small business. (The first production was accomplished under a pear tree in the family’s garden.)
In 1999, as Brita grew, Heinz Hankammer passed on the responsibility as managing director of Brita GmbH to his son, Markus, and took over as chairman of the supervisory board. Today Brita is the world market leader in freestanding household water filters.
Thanks to Hankammer, an idea from a small town in Germany became an international success story and helped change the world. His inspiring vision made it possible for people throughout the world to dramatically improve the quality of their tap water. It’s safe to say that both his life’s work and his corporate philosophy have been influenced in countless ways by the wisdom of water -- a symbol of power and clarity, of movement and regeneration -- indeed, of life itself.
